Barbie/Barbenheimer
Just as Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” movie was announced to be in the making, bright, lively accessories and every shade of pink imaginable began popping up everywhere. The idea that every little girl’s favorite childhood doll was coming to life sparked this new fashion and lifestyle trend. Along with the release of “Barbie” came “Oppenheimer,” which set off a rivalry because of their same-day release. Medlies of the two movies began spreading through social media, where people were combining clips of the films to create their own: “Barbenheimer.”
Grimace
On June 12, McDonald’s released a purple, berry-flavored shake in the honor of their mascot Grimace’s birthday. Originally, Grimace was supposed to be a frightening, mean-spirited creature named “Evil Grimace,” which inspired the #grimaceshake trend on TikTok. In videos, someone would announce that they were going to try the Grimace shake, wish the mascot a “Happy Birthday”, and then take a sip. The camera would cut to the horrific aftermath of the person faking being dead or passed out with their Grimace shake poured all over and around their body.
Stanley Cups
Similar to previously popular reusable water bottles Hydroflask and Yeti, Stanley Cups promise to keep ice for a long time: but something that makes them unique from other water bottle companies is a slimmer bottom to fit into cup holders. The brand was originally targeted toward a male audience – the classic Stanley thermos even being used by pilots in World War II – but the demographic took a more feminine turn when the infamous Stanley Cup began popping up all over gift guide blogs and social media platforms. The 11 colors and occasional limited-edition shades are trendy among women ranging from millennials to Gen-Z.
Girl Dinner & Girl Math
“Girl” trends have taken over social media in the past year, displaying girls’ insights on certain issues and their sometimes illogical explanations. “Girl Dinner,” for example, is a random assortment of snacks and pickings they either love individually or have left in the fridge. It is sometimes misinterpreted as meals, including only low-calorie and low-fat snack combinations. Another common one is “Girl Math,” where girls agree that spending more money then getting change back is considered a profit or believe that buying one expensive, long-lasting product is better than multiple cheaper items more often.
Buzzcuts
A haircut that has been more frequently seen and asked for this year is the buzzcut. The timeless, low-maintenance hairstyle most commonly worn by males in their early-to-late teenage years made a comeback in 2023. In some instances, entire sports teams have been buzzing their hair to create a sense of unity and pride. It has even been spotted on celebrities, such as Florence Pugh, Morgan Wallen, Harry Styles, and countless others.
