Girls Soccer
The girls’ soccer team had a great season going 16-6 record, bouncing back from a neutral season last year. The girls started with a strong six-game win streak, but lost to Delran in their seventh game. By the end of the regular season, the team earned a 13-5 record, and was seeded fourth for the NJSIAA South Jersey, Group 2 playoff bracket. Led by leading goal scorers sophomore Shiloh Moore (27 goals) and junior Bailey Coston (19 goals), the Lady Pirates rolled past their first three playoff opponents, not allowing a point through that span. In the final, the Pirates were challenged by the second-seeded Seneca. In a tough game, the Pirates fell to the Golden Eagles 3-1. However, the team will look to return to the final in the future, especially with a predominantly young team with only three graduating seniors.
Winter Track
Over the past few seasons the Pirates have been dominant in indoor track, and this past season was no different, with the boys winning their second sectional championship in the last six years. With eight total qualifiers for the state meet, including standouts like senior Malicah Etienne, senior Alexander Boyko, and junior Derrick Robinson, the boys aimed to become state champions. Unfortunately, the boys fell just short to Rumson Fair Haven by two points. The girls also saw success with senior Kozette Quinn, senior Stephanie Renouf, senior Lea Del Grippo, and sophomore Kellyn Coller all qualifying for states. In addition to the sectional title, the significant increase in turnout was a big story of the season. The program has never seen more than 45 participants, however this past season the team saw 55 athletes. The coaches believe that this influx of participants could signal a bright future for the team.
Softball
Pirates Softball had a rocky start to the season with a 2-3 record. However, the team rallied together to move forward and went on a 15-game win streak. The team finished the season with a win and a loss, heading into playoffs as the second seed. In the first round, the girls rolled past Haddonfield with a 15-0 victory and Collingswood with an 8-0 win. With a 3-1 score in the semifinal round, Cinnaminson prevailed against Cedar Creek and looked to defeat Haddon Heights in the final. In a tough game, Haddon Heights defeated the Pirates 1-0 in retribution for their regular season matchup.
Football
After the Pirate’s bounce-back 6-3 season last year, there was a lot of pressure on the current seniors to continue the success. Despite losing 20 seniors coming into this season, the Pirates defied expectations and went 9-2, reaching the semifinal round of playoffs. The team started strong in the season opener with a 42-0 shutout against the Palmyra Panthers, securing Coach Mario Patrizi’s 100th win. With great seasons from senior quarterback Brian Finerghty and senior running back Kyle Willis, the Pirates went on to win their next six games, which was the first 7-0 start for the team since 1991. This stretch included a 22-9 win at Delran and a revenge 46-0 victory against Maple Shade. The streak was snapped in a tough 13-9 loss to Seneca in week 8 nearing the end of the season. The Pirates outscored their opponents 291-43 by the end of the regular season. In the first round of playoffs, the team defeated New Providence 14-0. Unfortunately, the Pirate’s strong season ended after a 49-21 loss to the first-seeded Point Pleasant Boro.
Meet of Champs Qualifiers
Coming off of an excellent Winter season, the Pirates headed into the spring with high hopes and expectations. The team did not disappoint with some excellent performances from both the girls and the boys, and several athletes qualified for the Meet of Champions. The team saw a lot of success at the state meet with the girls 4×8 team (senior Stephanie Renouf, senior Samantha Magin, junior Anna Marino, and sophomore Kellyn Coller) placing second, and senior Lea Del Grippo placing second as well. On the boys side, senior Malicah Etienne placed first in the shot put, senior Joel Blamon placed second in the long jump, and senior Alex Boyko placed third in the 3200. Additionally, junior Derrick Robinson placed third in the high jump, and sophomore Eddie Frey placed 5th in the pole vault, and the boys 4×8 also got 5th. With this being Coach Fourney’s final season, and the loss of many seniors, the team will look to continue this year’s success next season.
