The Cinnaminson High School swim team currently sits at 8-1, winning seven meets in a row, including the last regular season meet against Sterling. The team sits at the top of the Bering Sea division, with a 5-0 division record. Their sole loss for the season came during their opening meet against Haddon Heights, 103-67.

Traditionally among the best teams in South Jersey, the Pirates haven’t had a losing season since 2014-2015 and are eager to continue their winning streak. After last season’s interruptions with Covid, this year’s team has had more access to the pool for practice, which is helping them out in the long run.

“This year we have a lot more lanes and the pool is better,” junior Eli Kern said. “Last year had a lot more restrictions due to Covid.”

Although there are still preventative measures and restrictions regarding Covid, they have eased since the 2020-2021 season. Last year’s restrictions included no spectators at meets, always having to wear a mask, and most notably, no playoffs.

“The feeling I get after I put in a lot of effort at practice, when it finally ends I feel good for doing it,” Kern says.

Coach Collin Canfield expressed how the team’s camaraderie has made this season stand out.

“The personalities of the swimmers. They’re so much fun to be around,” Coach Canfield said. “Everybody is really good to one another. They’re excellent teammates to each other. They all work hard together. They all just work together to create such a fun and accepting atmosphere.”

The Pirates are continuing their consistency of winning this season and Coach Canfield said he expects the team to make it to the playoffs.

“This year we do expect to make the playoffs, and we’re hoping to get as deep as possible into the playoffs,” Canfield said. “So that will be a lot of fun getting back into the playoffs, it’s been a few years since we’ve experienced any playoffs.”

Cinnaminson is a town rich in swimming. The town is fortunate to have lots of swimming families come out of clubs like Pheasant Run and Pomona, which are known to produce amazing talent. The benefits of these clubs are seen for the Cinnaminson High School. Coach Canfield is an assistant coach at Pheasant Run, and the head coach of the Pirates, Jon David Schroeder, was the head coach at Pheasant Run for four years.

“We’re such a small school, but for being a small school we have a pretty strong team,” Canfield said. “I mean, swimming is a Cinnaminson Township pastime with clubs like Pomona and Pheasant Run right here in town so there’s lots of strong swimming that comes out of Cinnaminson.”

The Pirates look to finish their season out strong with a playoff bid, and hopefully a deep playoff run to conclude another successful season for the Pirates. The team’s last regular-season meet was held Thursday, Feb. 3.
