Halloween Nights at Eastern State Penitentiary is in an abandoned building, the Eastern State Penitentiary, which contains five haunted houses in the Philadelphia area. The Eastern State Penitentiary was a former American prison. Now the building serves as a historical site, but during the Halloween season they host frights and live entertainment.

Before the prison was known for its scares, it contained some of the infamous inmates, “Sick Willie” Sutton and “Scarface” Al Capone. The prison was once the most expensive in the world. It cost around $780,000 when it opened in 1829.

One of the five haunted houses revolves around the idea of a crypt, hence its name, “The Crypt.” It’s described on their website as, “The creature that lives within requires a sacrifice. Watch your step or the queen and her bloodthirsty minions might mark you as their next offering.” Another haunted house, “Nightmares,” banks on the idea of sleep paralysis and takes its viewers into a dream-like scene with fog machines and strobe lights. “As sleep paralysis sets in, there’s no escaping the terrors that lurk in the shadows. Mr. Sandman conjures up a menagerie of frightening personalities all dead set on trapping you in your worst nightmares…forever.

Tickets for the Halloween Nights are available until the Event closes on November 12, 2022. Prices vary by age. Senior Citizens(62+) pay $15, adult tickets are $17, and children/students are $13.
