After losing many seniors last year, the Cinnaminson girl’s field hockey is far from diminished. In fact, they are having one of the best season in the school’s history, with a 14-1-1 record through October 19 and the top seed in all of Central Jersey Group 1 field hockey, outscoring their opponents 60-9 thus far.

Some players did not know what to expect going into the season. The kind of success the girls are having has not been seen since 2009 when the girls went 13-6 and made it to the second round of the playoffs. Senior Roxanne Wesley was nervous to see what the team could do this season.

“Going into this field hockey season I wasn’t quite sure what was going to happen because our entire team left us last year but a lot of the underclassmen stepped up and filled the role of the seniors who left us last year.”

The girls left no doubt that they were going to be a team to be reckoned with in the first four games when they outscored their first four opponents 17-2, beating Delran, Holy Cross, Bordentown and New Egypt in the process.  The girls posted six shutouts in their first eight games and had a goal differential of 33-2.

The team has a great deal of young talent, including junior Maura Tumbelty. Maura has had an impact on the varsity playing field since her freshman year and continues to have more and more of an impact on the field each year.  Maura leads all of Burlington County in goals this year with 30 goals as a junior. Fellow junior Marissa Porrini and senior Serafina Kennedy are among the tops in assists in the county as well, with nine and 10, respectively.

“It’s a great feeling, being able to say that you’re (fourteen) and one is amazing, it’s a very big step up for our program considering the field hockey team use to have like only like fifteen girls on it and not enough for a jv program,” said Roxanne Wesley continued, “Our expectations are to finish number one in the division,”  Roxanne finished.

The Girls Field Hockey team did end up reaching their goal of winning the BCSL division and look forward to bettering their record and making a run in the playoffs that start on Monday, October 30.

“The chemistry that our team developed early in the season during preseason definitely helped us connect better on and off the field.”

The chemistry and strong core of young girls that are full of potential, are great building blocks for years to come.
