The Cinnaminson Girls Lacrosse team had a rocky start to their season. Losing the season opener against Holy Cross 16-3 the girls knew they had a lot to improve on. As the season continued, the team improved within each game to the complete team they are.

The girls started the season 6-3 with nice wins over Delran and New Egypt to start the season.  With a current record of 9-7 they have successfully kept a positive record throughout the season and improved to the point where they will be a tough team to defeat in the playoffs.

“The players are really starting to work well together and having a winning season right now is [building confidence] as we continue to battle through a tough schedule,” states varsity coach Laura Curran.

Having lost a couple winnable games against Hamilton West and Mainland in the past two weeks because of the crazy spring weather, the girls are rested and ready to travel to Red Bank Catholic today for their playoff game.  The team opens the playoffs as the 13-seed against a fourth-seeded team that won the Shore Conference B Division championship, going undefeated in their league games.

This season the team is led by senior captains Jenna Mullin, Katie O’Connor, Julia Averill, and Lexi Colella. Being the only returning starters, they have been working well to lead the team to success. After two losses the girls have comeback with wins against Delran, New Egypt, Moorestown Friends and West Windsor-Plainsboro South.

“Our goal scorers are across the board this year, we also have a younger defense and they’ve been playing really well, so it’s great to see them step up,” explains senior captain Julia Averill.

Considering the loss of eight seniors from last season, younger players have had opportunities to step up to varsity, which it appears they have been doing quite well.

“The new players are stepping up to the challenges and complimenting the returners from last year,” Coach Curran comments.

As the season continues the team is working on building up the new players and strengthening their techniques altogether. “Everyone on this team is important and contributes in their own way. Emily Brennan is doing a great job in goal, the defense is becoming more confident led by [sophomore] Emily Treharne and Jenna Mullin,” explains Coach Curran.

A win of 17-2 against Maple Shade helped to give the girls the confidence to face Holy Cross again. Unfortunately the score did not reflect what they had hoped for, leaving the girls with a 19-4 loss against the Lancers.

The team has been constantly preparing for bigger and bigger competition throughout the season with the challenging schedule they had to face this season. With great chemistry and skilled leaders they only expect to continue improving within each game and ultimately to do well in the playoffs that start this afternoon at 3:45 in Red Bank, NJ.
