Cinnaminson High School’s Art Club has been asked to create a very special project. The art club was contacted by one of the physical therapists at the Cinnaminson Center (a local nursing and rehabilitation home). It had come to their attention at the Cinnaminson Center that a certain resident who was refusing to use her walker. In a hope to appease the resident they painted it pink. She was delighted, and this gave those on the board at the Cinnaminson Center the idea of decorating walkers, canes, and wheelchairs for the residents.

“We took about 10 members [of the art club] to the Cinnaminson Center about a month ago. We interviewed the residents and then picked up their walkers and canes to work on them,” Mrs. DePietro explained. She also clarified that the residents were given temporary equipment aides while theirs are being transformed.

After talking to the residents, the CHS Art Club members were able to get a feel for what they liked and could then personalize the decorations according to their preferences. Mrs. DePietro has observed the fun her students have had with this project and she hopes that this can become a tradition for the art club. “This has probably been one of my most enthused projects,” Mrs. DePietro admitted.

Mrs. DePietro discussed how involved her students have been and how hard they have worked on making the equipment perfect for the residents. The students were able to speak with people older than them and get a new perspective on life and take the time to help them which is very rewarding.

The canes and walkers, in their new appearances, hope to be delivered to the Cinnaminson Center residents by sometime during mid-November.
