The Cinnaminson girls’ volleyball team has high hopes for this year’s season. The Pirates raced out to a strong 7-3 start scoring big wins against Hopewell Valley, Northern Burlington, and Collingswood while falling to strong teams in Sterling and Camden Catholic.

As of now the team has an impressive 19-11 record, after having won six of their last seven matches. Coach Sara Skvir perhaps has the highest expectations of anyone for her team in saying, “We should win the rest of our games.” This is a testament to her team’s progression as one of their final games is against rival Camden Catholic, a team they already suffered a tough 2-1 defeat against on September 24. The girls are working towards redeeming themselves against the Irish.

Coach Skvir was full of praise for her team calling them, “One of the best teams I’ve coached in five years,” but also saying that, “sometimes they don’t play to their potential,” but added that she is very happy with her team’s performance so far this year.

The accomplishment Coach Skvir is most adamant about is the team’s huge victory against Sterling. On September 17 the team lost to Sterling, 2-0, but avenged their defeat on October 15 in a 2-1 victory. Coach Skvir was especially happy with the team’s performance saying that they, “served hard and the girls finally did what we’ve been telling them.”

Junior Kelly Sigmund explained her optimism to the remainder of the season in pointing to the teams veteran balance of juniors and seniors, “This is probably the best were going to be in a long time,” but also expressing optimism for the future for the veteran team that will be returning next year in saying, “Next year were all going to be seniors and still be pretty good.”

As the season comes to an end the girls are not anxious but excited about furthering their successful season. With four games remaining the team is fully expected to win the division and to make a deep run in the playoffs.

The team has endured an exciting season containing the highs and lows of close victories and will look to continue their recent strong play when they open the playoffs tomorrow, traveling to Rumson-Fair Haven at 4:30.
