The CHS boys’ track team has much to be proud of this spring season, including a D1-bound senior in Eddie Frey and additional support from new coaches.
Head coach Tim Callinan, who has been coaching at CHS for 14 years and has run all of his life, also coaches winter track. He explains that, weather-wise, there is not a lot of change in spring, but team-wise, the spring team is bigger than the winter team, which Callinan said he enjoys.
“Sometimes it’s warmer out, but it’s a bigger team, which some people find as a negative, but I find it as a positive just because we can cover more event areas and have a little bit more fun,” Callinan said.
Coach Shock, who formerly coached pole vaulting, now coaches sprinting.
Ahead of the season Callinan spoke highly of Shock’s coaching.
“He definitely is working the guys really hard, and we are starting to see early success, and we are all excited to see what he does and accomplishes this season,” Callinan said.
Sophomore Dylan Burk said he enjoys being pushed by his coaches to make the most of his practices and be able to perform at his best during meets.
“My coaches have pushed me to my fullest potential and work with me to become better, whether that is a hard workout or just a certain lift in the weight room,” Burk said.
Reflecting on last season and applying what Callinan has learned this season, he wants to apply different training techniques and get a better understanding of these athletes’ abilities.
“Just learning different kinds of training methods, more when it comes towards understanding the athletes’ aerobic ability and try to get them faster,” Callinan said.
Within coaching a big team, some athletes stand out to Callinan, including senior Eddie Frey, who competes in pole-vaulting; Victor Meira, who is also a senior and is a thrower; and junior Jake Wickersham who is a distance runner.
“Frey who’s the new school record in the pole vault indoors, Victor Meira is a very good thrower that we really capitalized on what he did last year and then Jake Wickersham and he’s a two-time sectional champion and has the ability to add more titles this season,” Callinan said of the boys’ accomplishments.
As a senior, Frey wants to make the most of his last season at CHSl and leave his mark before he finishes out his senior season.

“My goal this season is to increase my PR and break the outdoor school record,” Frey said. “I will make the most of each practice and do more than what is required of me whether that’s in the weight room or on the track.”
Throughout high school, making memories is important. Being able to remember and look back on the good times with the people who have been there through school is something special to each person.
“The most memorable thing I’ve experienced in outdoor track was my junior season where I cleared 14 feet under the lights at Delsea Regional High school, and it was my first time being ranked top 10 in the state of NJ,” Frey said.
