The Cinnaminson girls’ track and field team is off to a strong start this season thanks to a mix of new talent and experienced leadership. While the team has fewer seniors this year, the girls are working hard and supporting each other every step of the way.
The girls ‘ team’s strong start this season is thanks to some impressive individual performances. Senior Kellen Coller placed first in the 400m hurdles at the Don Danser relays, as did Anela Asbury, who took third in the shot put. Junior Sihloh Moore placed first in the triple jump with an impressive mark of 33 feet and one inch.
Head Coach Derek Moore explained how this season is different due to the team being younger than in past seasons.
“We don’t have a whole lot of senior leadership,” Moore said. “Most of our sprinters are freshmen, and the few seniors we have are new to the team. But everyone is stepping up, and that’s been really exciting to see.”
Shiloh Moore, who competes in the 100 hurdles and the 4×100 relay, has become a leader on the team. She shared how she prepares before a race.
“I listen to music, and I rely on my teammates for support. Bonding as a team is super important,” Shiloh Moore said. “Whether it’s a dinner or just cheering each other on, it helps us get ready mentally.”
She also talked about how one’s nerves can get the best of them before a race.
“Right before the gun goes off, that’s probably the hardest part,” Shiloh Moore said. “You just have to trust all the work you’ve put in,” she explained.
Senior Naa’ilah Munson, who is in her final season, is focused on making the most of her time left.
“Being a senior is bittersweet,” Munson said. “It’s sad knowing it’s almost over, but it’s also exciting to know that I’m about to start a new chapter of my life.”
Munson’s personal goal for this season is to improve.
“I want to be better than I was last year, and for the team, I hope we can work together to become BCSL champions again,” Munson said.
Coach Moore said the younger athletes have been able to adjust to the pace and rigor of the sport.
While the team keeps a lot of familiar faces there is also an influx of underclassmen that add new layers of depth and keep this team exciting for years to come.
“A lot of the younger girls are really pushing themselves,” Moore said. “It’s been impressive to see how they’ve stepped up. It’s a big part of our success this season.”
With a focus on hard work, team bonding, and building confidence, the Lady Pirates are determined to keep improving and finish as champions again. The mix of energy from the younger athletes and leadership from the seniors is setting the team up for a strong finish.
