Miss Iris Archer is among the new staff members joining the Cinnaminson High School family this year. As an English teacher, Archer teaches freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. New to both teaching and CHS, Archer said she is looking forward to getting more acquainted at the high school.
Before starting her career, Archer attended Cherokee High School and studied at Saint Bonaventure University located in New York where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees. In addition to focusing on academics, Archer was also involved in sports. She ran for her school’s cross country team in college and enjoyed it.
Having had experience as a student-athlete, Archer said she hopes to become more involved with the CHS community through possibly coaching or assisting in a variety of sports and extra-curriculars.
“I can see myself getting into coaching or assisting cross country, track or softball,” Archer said. “I also played an instrument in high school, so if I can, I would love to get involved with both band and sports!”
Growing up Archer and her peers always knew that she was meant to be a teacher. At a young age, Archer said she was known to call out randomly in class, which led to numerous parent-teacher conferences. Archer said she did this because she was enthusiastic about learning.
“One of my elementary teachers told my family that I was gifted. She told my parents I was too advanced, too eager, and wanted to know more outside of what the teachers were telling me,” Archer said.
Intrigued and interested in school, Archer said she loved coming to school as a student. She enjoyed learning and was always eager to learn something new. In English class specifically, Archer said she appreciated how her English teachers were able to pull together many different perspectives of an issue and build off their students’ thoughts and perspectives as well.
Following in similar footsteps as her grandmother, Archer said much of her inspiration for teaching comes from her grandmother.
“One of my inspirations was my grandmother. She was a professor at a college and I was told stories about her and how English positively impacted her life ”Archer said.
As she begins her teaching career, Archer looks to apply the same eagerness she had as a student to her new role as teacher.
“I am a lifetime learner and I will learn and change throughout my life,” Archer said of her teaching philosophy.
When not teaching, Archer has several hobbies outside of school that she enjoys.
“I love to run, to walk my dog, spend time with my family, and also play the guitar,” Archer said. “These are some things that I get to do in my free time and how I like to separate school and after school.”
